I was commissioned to take some behind-the-scenes photos of the MAXT OUT dance competition in my hometown of San Gabriel, CA. I love doing this kind of stuff because it allows me to document more of the human side of a large production. I got up close and personal with all of the dance groups right before they were to hit the stage (and there were A LOT), so as you may imagine, a wide range of emotions were on display. Dancers are a familial group of people, and everybody is really supportive of each other. My favorite part of the night was watching the teams huddle together right before going out on stage. I enjoy photographing performances, but being able to capture the raw emotions behind the preparation and hard work ultimately leads to more meaningful photos. Plus who doesn’t like seeing all the little details of what goes on behind the big show? Enjoy the photos!
