NASCAR races in Fontana

Over the weekend, I worked with the Auto Club Speedway photo crew in Fontana, California, to produce images from the campingworld.com 300 and the Pepsi MAX 400 races, respectively.  Over two races, we produced over 90 gigabytes of pictures.  This was my first time shooting anything on a track, and let me just say that I have a newfound respect and appreciation for NASCAR racing.  Sure, these guys are driving 300-400 miles in an oval doing 150 mph, and it ain’t really much to watch on TV, but to be there is a completely different experience.  This is a sport where fans (who pay an extra 45-50 bucks or so) can actually get up close to their racing heroes by entering the garage area, seeing the cars up close in the pit boxes before races, having a chance to greet drivers as they are introduced, and seeing the pit crew in action during the race.  The pit boxes are the coolest part of the races, in my opinion.  During pit stops, photographers and TV crews are allowed up in the pit box to capture the quick adjustments made in the short 14 second stops (and let me just tell you this is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in person).  The tires spinning, the growls of the engines, the gasoline spilling, the fumes of gas and nitrous oxide filling the air, and not to mention the sheer speed of these cars as they whiz by on the track – all have to be experienced in person in order to appreciate the overall cool factor of these races.  I’m excited to share these images with you guys, and I’m hoping to get more opportunities to photograph more races in the future.  Enjoy!
